Springing ahead: Kicking off new projects and automotive plastics pilot dismantling

This month at the Global Impact Coalition we are kicking off five new projects, advancing two others toward spin-off, and launching vehicle dismantling for our Automotive Plastics Circularity pilot.

On April 28–29, members from the eight companies involved in the pilot gathered in northern Netherlands to begin the critical first step: dismantling end-of-life vehicles in a completely new way to collect plastic parts.

Meanwhile our members are organizing teams to drive progress in a number of new working groups. Here are a few of the new projects we're kicking off:

100% Circular Waste Streams: Mapping waste streams and recycling technologies, and prioritizing promising value chains (e.g., MSW) to assess, optimize, and pilot circular solutions.

New Sustainable Biomass Sources: Identifying new sources of sustainable biomass and evaluating conversion methods through an as-is study, with the aim to define concrete value chain projects in collaboration with partners.

PFAS Remediation & Destruction: Assessing current technologies and start-ups to find effective ways to retain or destroy sub-C8 PFAS at low concentrations in process water, then pilot promising solutions at member sites.

Stay tuned for more updates as our working groups gain momentum and we continue to drive cross-sector collaboration forward!

Stronger Together: Strategy and Trust-Building at the GIC Executive Offsite

Earlier this month, we held our annual GIC Executive Committee team-building and strategy planning offsite in the Jura and at the World Economic Forum headquarters in Geneva. Leaders from our member companies took time away from their day-to-day environments to explore, reflect, and connect. These moments are crucial for deepening trust, strengthening alignment, and energizing our shared mission. Together, we mapped out priorities for the coming year—aligning on future projects, identifying new opportunities, and defining critical enablers to accelerate tangible progress toward net zero and circularity.

“We cannot create a better future alone. We need strong partnerships along the value chain—from feedstock sourcing to end consumers. The role of the chemical sector is changing, and new opportunities, like synthetic fuels, are ‘chemicals’ in the end. Given the challenges we face, this kind of collaboration is essential."

Over 800,000 metric tons of plastic from end-of-life vehicles in Europe end up in landfills or incinerators each year. However, despite the automotive industry’s sustainability commitments, less than 20% of these plastics are recycled. The Global Impact Coalition's Automotive Plastics Circularity project is working on recycling ELV plastics more efficiently.
